Description

Rx symbolBacitracin is an effective antibiotic produced by a strain of the bacterial species Bacillus sutilis and is widely used as topical therapy for skin and eye infections. It is effective against gram-positive bacteria, including strains of staphylococcus that are resistant to penicillin.

Usage

Typically, bacitracin is for topical use only to treat skin and some eye infections. Studies have been done related to other uses, including use of bacitracin in the treatment of enterocolitis, a severe inflammation of the large colon and cecum. The latest information shows this antibiotic to be more successful than current conventional treatment.

Dosage and Administration

When using bacitracin as an ointment, the affected area should be clean and dry, and the ointment should be applied in a thin layer, and, where necessary, covered with a bandage.

When using bacitracin as an opthalmic (eye) ointment, apply a thin film over the cornea 3 or 4 times daily. The area to be treated should be properly cleansed prior to use. Foreign bodies, crusted exudates, and debris should be carefully removed. Insert the tip of the tube beneath the lower lid and express a small quantity of the ointment into the conjunctival sac.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Side Effects

Redness, rash, and a burning sensation are noted side effects.

Precautions

Manufacturer's directions for use should be followed very carefully, and large amounts of the ointment should not be used because of the likelihood of side effects. Applying more, or application over a longer period of time, will not clear the condition more rapidly.

If given internally, or if major overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center immediately. .

Interactions

None noted.

Overdose

Side effects noted above may be more severe.
