Description

Imidocarb Dipropionate is an Anti-protozoal drug. Protozoa are single-cell animals that can easily be seen with a microscope. These animals, amongst which are the common amoeba, are responsible for many gastrointestinal and circulatory ailments.

Usage

Imidocarb dipropionate is used in the treatment and control of rickettsial diseases including Babesiosis (piroplasmosis) in the horse.  Treatment protocol using Imidocarb Dipropionate was developed to clear the horse of the infectious stages of Babesia caballi and Theileria equi.

Notes: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.. Equine piroplasmosis is classified as a reportable disease in the United States.  Treatment may only be undertaken under proper federal supervision. Imizol is labeled for use in dogs; use in horses constitutes an extra-label drug use and may only be undertaken under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. Imidocarb has significant toxic side-effects and should not be used in the horse except by a veterinarian to treat piroplasmosis. Calculator is for educational purposes only. Side Effects

Pain during injection; injection site reactions; colic; diarrhea; excessive tearing; sweating; nasal discharge

Precautions

Do not administer to patients exposed to cholinesterase-inhibiting drugs, pesticides, or chemicals.  Some side-effects may be mitigated by pre-medication with anti-inflammatory drugs.  Donkeys may be sensitive to the toxic effects of the drug.  Do not administer intravenously

Overdose

Toxicity signs are similar to the listed side-effects.  Chronic toxicity may damage liver, intestine, and lungs.
