Four Traits of Outstanding Horsemen and Horsewomen

A Truly Outstanding Horseman or Horsewoman Has the Following Four Traits

Uses Good Observational Skills:

Good observational skills promote enjoyment of the horse in all its beauty and prowess, and also aids in the early detection of injury, illness, or unusual development that might affect the well-being of the horse. Being around experienced horse people allows enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience to benefit from learning new and valuable insights into horses.

Practices Patience, Calmness, and Confidence:

Horses are great at interpreting voice inflections and body language. A good horseman moves with quiet authority and always speaks with a low, calm voice. Horses think and act within a hierarchy and are usually looking for a leader. A good horseman instills respect and confidence in the horses under his care and becomes a true leader.

Uses Great Organizational Skills:

A good horseman maintains an up-to-date preventative medicine program and hoof-care schedule and doesn't put off until tomorrow the things that should be done today. He/She ensures that the horse facilities and all equipment are kept in good repair and in their proper place.

Acts as an Advocate for All Horses:

A good horseman or horsewoman is an advocate for horses everywhere, whether they are world-renowned race horses or simply the horse that lives in the corral down the street, in the next county, in the wilds, or across the ocean. A great horseman has a healthy respect for the species and strives to improve the welfare of horses everywhere.
