Horses on Turnpike Cause Closure

Warwick Turnpike was briefly closed in the pre-dawn hours of Friday, Feb. 18 due to a reported "animal incident."

According to West Milford Police Capt. Timothy Storbeck, at 3:55 a.m. a call came in that two local horses had escaped their enclosure in the vicinity of Warwick Turnpike and Marlboro Road and were walking on the turnpike.

After herding the horses off the road, responding officers called for an animal control officer (ACO) to respond. But instead, a friend of a local ACO responded to the scene with a horse trailer and agreed to take care of the horses until the horses’ owner could be determined, said Storbeck.

But the offer became unnecessary because the horses’ owner called police as the animals were being loaded onto the trailer, and the horses were taken back home instead, said Storbeck.
