Through the first 9-days of the month, Thoroughbreds racing with a FLAIR Strip won a remarkable 14-stakes races, including 8-Graded events. Notable among them was last year’s Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf champion, Oscar Performance. Raced by Amerman Racing LLC, the Brian Lynch trainee put in a stunning effort when winning the $1.2-million Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (GI) at Belmont Park last Saturday. The bay ridgling by Kitten’s Joy is now a multiple Graded-stakes winner of 5-races from 8-lifetime-starts, with earnings of over $1.4-million.
Standandardbreds were in the spotlight at the Meadowlands Saturday night, with the featured running of the $240,000 Graduate Series final for 4-year-old pacers. Brad Gray, Michael Guerriero and Menary Racing’s Sintra paced a winning trip while equaling the world-record in 1:47 2/5 for driver Jody Jamieson. Trained by David Menary, the Mach Three son has won six of eight races this year, with career earnings of over $445,000.
Quarter-Horse racing at Delta Downs produced some fireworks as well, with the undefeated filly Dashunder Afullmoon making quick work of her opposition in the $705,495 Lee Berwick Futurity (RGI). Conditioned by Jose Sanchez for owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr., the Heza Fast Dash daughter completed the 350-yards in :17.481 seconds. Dashunder Afullmoon is now the leading 2-year-old in the nation with more than $527,000 in career earnings.
Currently ranked #4 among 90-rookie competitors in the 2017 WPRA World Pro Rodeo Standings, Team FLAIR’s Alexis Baratka clearly has her sights set on securing the #1 spot by year’s end. With multiple top go-round performances through 20 events thus far, the Deerfield, Wisconsin native struck gold when capturing the 2017 St. Croix Valley PRCA Rodeo title. Currently ranked among the top-85 - of 635 listed competitors - in the WPRA World Standings, Baratka returned to the winner’s circle when winning her second title last week at the 41st Annual Isanti Firefighters Rodeo in Isanti, Minnesota.
Jennie Brannigan won her second Great Meadow International CICO3* in The Plains, Virginia. Partnered with Tim and Nina Gardner’s Cambalada, Brannigan rode a clear cross-country test with 1.6 time penalties vaulting her to the lead, and securing the win.
