The deaths of these miniature horses follow the deaths of several other horses from lightning strikes. In Missouri, on June 25, 2015, a man and two horses died after being struck by lightning.

As of July 1, 2015, workers and volunteers with a therapeutic horse riding center in Salisbury, North Carolina, were mourning the loss of three horses killed when lightning struck a tree under which they were standing.

Back on June 12, 2015, three horses were killed and one horse was injured when a lightning strike or a falling tree that was struck, hit them during a storm.
