You swat at them, your horse swishes its tail at them, and you’re both really annoyed at those pesky, annoying flies. However, flies and other insects pose more than a nuisance — they’re the culprits for transmitting serious diseases in horses such as equine infectious anemia and pigeon fever.

United Vet Equine has an arsenal of supplies for your crusade to be fly-free!

Thankfully, numerous products are available from United Vet Equine that act as combatants to fly and insect populations. They range from baits, traps, supplements, masks, sheets, to sprays and wipes.

Each has its own purpose and appropriate application, and often several products are used together to gain maximum protection. Whatever protection you choose, the result is that you and your horses will be relieved of those irritating flies.

Baits and traps help to eliminate huge quantities of flies. Wall dispensers provide a misting system, while fly traps are effective for areas with high fly concentrations (they’re easy to use — just add water and hang the trap; when it’s full, simply cap it off and place it in the garbage).

Other traps range from a trapping surface that’s insecticide and odor free, to a milk jug trap (good repurpose for that plastic jug!) that can trap up to 35,000 flies.

Just a 1/4 pound of sugar bait granules can cover 500 square feet. Fly catchers in ribbon form can be placed anywhere, and contain no insecticides. Sticky fly tape, a longtime staple for fly control, is safe anywhere. Fly predators are a natural enemy of flies but don’t bother people or animals; these tiny USDA-approved insects are sprinkled on manure and prevent fly larvae from becoming adult flies. And fly bait can produce results in as little as 60 seconds!

MVP’s “Flies-A-Way” all-natural supplement tops the list with its ingredients of diatomaceous earth, garlic, MSM and apple cider vinegar. A variety of fly control supplements, fed to the horse on a daily basis, contain ingredients from garlic, yeast, and grape seed extract to apple cider vinegar, and typically prevent immature flies from developing into adults. Many of these supplements contain diatomaceous earth, which discourages insect breeding in manure.

Horsemen are familiar with fly masks and fly sheets for horses, and United Vet Equine provides a huge selection, along with fly leg wraps, fly repellant collars, and leg bands that ward off flies.

Fly sprays and wipes have been around for decades. The type and ingredients have broadened over the years, including ingredients such as citronella and lanolin. Application and delivery varies from sprays, roll-on, gels, foggers, lotion, spot application, and aerosols. There’s even a sunscreen just for horses! Fly/pest sprays for premises and barn areas are available too.

So don’t stand around with a fly swatter in hand while being annoyed at those wretched flies. Protect yourself, your barn area, and your horses with fly control products from United Vet Equine. You and your horses will be so glad you did!
