World Vets Provide Donkey Clinics in Tanzania

A World Vets team will work with ASPCA in Arusha, Tanzania to provide much needed veterinary assistance to the donkeys of the Maasai, Meru and Arusha people, June 21-29, 2012. Theteam will provide rural mobile donkey clinics for four days (however spend their nights in Arusha) where expected activities include routine veterinary care, floating teeth, hoof trimming, treatment of wounds and de-worming, as well as providing instruction on proper handling techniques.

A World Vets team will work with ASPCA in Arusha, Tanzania to provide much needed veterinary assistance to the donkeys of the Maasai, Meru and Arusha people, June 21-29, 2012.

Our objective is to improve the overall well being and health of the donkey population in Arusha, however it is not our intention to make them better workers. For this project we are also collecting donations of pony size halters (made from light weight material) for the donkeys that will be treated. This project is generously supported by Fondation Brigitte Bardot of Paris, France.

Positions on the veterinary team will not exceed 10 positions total, including the field service veterinarian. As such, preference will be given to current World Vets members as well as those with relevant experience. We are looking for applicants that can demonstrate the experience and skills that they would bring to the team.

Application Process

The volunteer positions for World Vets pilot project* to Arusha, Tanzania will be filled via an application process. Positions are open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians and students with relevant experience.

The ideal candidate has experience as well as education relating to equine veterinary medicine and practice.

* A pilot project is a new project undertaking where World Vets has not sent previous teams.

Project Details

The team will fly into Kilimanjaro International airport (Airport Code: JRO) and then travel to their accommodations in Arusha where they will stay for the duration of the project. The overall conditions on this project may be of a rustic nature; cold showers, bad roads for driving, minimal amenities and unreliable internet service. The team will also enjoy a one day safari tour in Arusha National Park.

Following the project, volunteers will have the option of staying longer to do further sight seeing (at their own expense) with the field service veterinarian, who has previous travel experience in Tanzania.

Project Fee: $1250 USD*

*Project fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable to other projects and/or persons

What is included: Volunteer kit, World Vets scrub top, pre-trip planning and coordination, accommodations, breakfast provided at accommodations, airport transfers, local ground transportation during veterinary work days, lunches on veterinary work days, full participation in project and all supplies as well as a one day safari tour in Arusha National Park.

What is not included: International airfare, Tanzania volunteer visa fees, vaccinations and/or other health related expenses, optional excursions, incidentals, and anything not specifically outlined as included.

Accommodations

The World Vets team will stay at a lodge located in Arusha for the duration of the project. When not working and/or following work, the team will be able to enjoy a relaxing environment, pool, along with internet/WiFi service. The lodge also has a restaurant and bar located onsite as well as laundry services available. Accommodations will be shared.
