The Equine Rescue Center located in San Mateo County has been forced to relocate to an area near Hollister after losing a promised lease on pasture land near Pescadero. Because of the high cost of land in the coastal areas of San Mateo County, the director of the rescue center found it necessary to look elsewhere for a suitable site.

Monica Gavin, founder and director of the nonprofit Equine Rescue Center, is in the process of moving her 26 horses and three donkeys to their new home on roughly 3,000 acres located on New Idria Road, roughly 20 minutes past Panoche Valley.

The rescue center program was in a partnership with Puente de la Costa Sur, a Pescadero-based charity. The Equine Rescue Center also worked with children with disabilities.

Gavin hopes to launch similar programs at the new site near Hollister, along with on-site camping. Hollister's temperate weather is better for the horses, many of which have arthritis. The sheer vastness of the property will permit the nonprofit to save more horses from dangerous and abusive situations.
