In their first-ever national conference for horse owners and enthusiasts, the Humane Society of the United States and other horse welfare groups will present Honoring the Horse - a 2-day conference featuring guest speakers on a wide array of equine topics.

In their first-ever national conference for horse owners and enthusiasts next week in New Orleans, the Humane Society of the United States and other horse welfare groups will present Honoring the Horse - a 2-day conference featuring guest speakers on a wide array of equine topics, including:

  • Keynote address from Monty Roberts, author of “The Man Who Listens to Horses.”
  • Welcome address from former Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, longtime advocate for horse protection legislation.
  • Plan 4 Progress learning platform from Trevor Carter, founder Carter Ranch Horse.
  • Equine injury and disease prevention with Dr. Sheila Lyons, DVM, founder of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Disaster preparedness and large animal rescue with Dr. Rebecca Gimenez, president and primary Instructor, TLAER, Inc., Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue.
  • Rider fitness with Debbie Rodriguez of Success in the Saddle, a core fitness program for the equestrian.
  • Rehoming and retraining off-the-track Thoroughbreds with Steuart Pittman, founder and president of the Retired Racehorse Project.

In addition, the Humane Society of the United States will host several events in New Orleans in conjunction with its 24th annual Animal Care Expo, including a special announcement of a $1 million grant package for Gulf Coast animal shelters and veterinary programs.

  • Grant awards presentation:
                Monday, March 30, 2:30 p.m.
    The HSUS and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association will present grants to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine ($300,000), Mississippi State School of Veterinary Medicine ($300,000), Louisiana SPCA ($250,000), Jefferson Parish SPCA ($22,000) and Pen Pals, Inc., a non-profit that supports the animal shelter operated by the Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, Louisiana ($150,000). Sen. David Vitter and other dignitaries will also be in attendance.
     
  • Animal Care Expo 2015:
                 Monday, March 30 – Thursday, April 2
    The premier national educational conference and trade show for animal welfare professionals and volunteers includes more than 70 workshops, a large exhibit hall and six daylong certificate courses. About 2,500 attendees from animal shelters, rescue groups and animal care agencies from around the world are expected.
     
  • Honoring the Horse 2015:
                Tuesday, March 31 – Wednesday, April 1
    The HSUS’ first national equine event is geared toward anyone who owns horses, is considering owning a horse, trains horses for competition, cares about the welfare of horses, or wants to improve their understanding of all things equine. Featured presenters include Monty Roberts, bestselling author of The Man Who Listens to Horses, and former Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu.
