The EQUUS Foundation is the only national animal welfare charity in the United States that is 100% dedicated to protecting America’s horses and strengthening the bond between horses and people, especially people with special needs.

Horses can dramatically improve the lives of people with special needs and allow them to live life as productively and independently as possible, yet equine activities and therapies are only available to a small percentage of people with special needs.

The EQUUS Foundation has one of the most comprehensive and impartial verification processes to inspire donor confidence in the charities selected to receive financial support from the EQUUS Foundation each year.

Financial support is provided to only those organizations that are both fully transparent & accountable to the public and are operating at the highest standards of horse care. What's important to realize is that there is a great disparity in horse care practices among equine organizations.

“What is especially difficult is that for the past several years, we received over $500,000 in requests but only had less than half in funds available for awards.

Understanding that over 100,000 American horses are being shipped over the border for slaughter each year, and that the ban on this transportation may take effect by the end of the year, it is more important now than ever before to identify and support rescue organizations with the capability of expanding their rehoming operations and equine therapy organizations with the capability of increasing their services to take on more horses,” said EQUUS Foundation President Lynn Coakley.

Participating in the #RideForHorses Auction will help re-home horses after their sport careers are over and increase the number of horses involved with Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) so that EAAT is available to more people with special needs.
