Equine Science Society (ESS) recently honored Patricia Harris, Ph.D., director of science, Mars Horsecare, for her work as a scientist and equine nutrition specialist.

Harris was presented with the Equine Nutrition Research Award, sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), during an annual ESS meeting in New Mexico in May. She is the first non-American to receive the prestigious award.

“Dr. Harris has been an instrumental member to our team, not only providing research for new products, but also looking at maximizing nutrient availability in our current formulas,” said Ryan Brown, marketing manager, Mars Horsecare US Inc. “We are honored that our brand is driven by the world-class research that Dr. Harris and her team provide.”

Harris joined the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition in 1995 and is responsible for the research carried out by the Equine Studies group, which provides the science behind the Buckeye® Nutrition brand.

She attended Cambridge University, UK, receiving Masters of Art and Veterinary Medicine degrees before becoming a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Harris also earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge for her equine rhabdomyolysis research carried out while at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket.

The editor of several books and proceedings, Harris has also served as author/co-author of approximately 30 book chapters and 160 peer-reviewed journal articles as well as more than 400 abstracts. She is a past president of the British Equine Veterinary Association, currently serves on the ESS board and has just been made an officer of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.

The Equine Nutrition Research Award is part of AFIA’s continuing awards program dating back 65 years. Harris was presented the award by Dr. Jennifer Earing, nutritionist, Tennessee Farmer’s Cooperative. AFIA is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to representing the business, legislative and regulatory interests of the U.S. animal feed industry and its suppliers.

Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Arlington, Va., AFIA is the recognized leader on international industry developments.
