A previously un-named horse fly found in Australia has been named after Beyonce Knowles who is famous world-wide for her singing, dancing, and show business talents. The fly was first collected in 1981, the same year the singer was born.
According to sources, the horse fly's golden lower abdomen prompted Australian scientist Bryan Lessard to officially describe the fly as Scaptia (Plinthina) byonceae. The scientist is quoted as saying, "It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name the fly in honour of the performer Beyonce...."
The fly was collected from north-east Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands, together with two other previously unknown specimens.
Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z have been in the news a great deal recently, along with their new baby daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.
