Arenus' Vision of Sustainable World

Sustainability is not just a "buzz word" at Arenus.  They take it seriously: from how they manufacture their products and design their work space to how they treat customers.

In 2010, Arenus acquired EQUILITETM herb supplements, SORE NO-MORE® products, and BOTANICAL ANIMAL® flower essences. Arenus is the companion animal health and nutrition division of Novus Nutrition Brands LLC, which is a growing business within Novus International Inc., global animal nutrition leader which creates science-based health and nutrition solutions for animal agriculture industries in 80 countries.

“For 20 years, Novus has been driven by a vision of a sustainable world,” said David Neuwirth, Executive Director of Novus Nutrition Brands, in the June 2011 Novus Innovation with Integrity annual report. “This vision remains acutely relevant in today’s world.  Our core values – providing products with demonstrable value, long-term customer satisfaction, acting with integrity, and protecting our employees, the public, and the environment – guide our business objectives and shape our organization’s culture.”

The 90,000-square foot Novus global headquarters in St. Charles, which houses the Arenus office and Novus International Research Center, were designed with 40% of construction material costs coming from salvaged and recycled materials (such as countertops made from recycled milk jugs), a storm water system reducing the environmental impact of runoff, under-floor air distribution for better energy efficiency, and 5,000 square feet (the second-largest array in Missouri) of solar panels.

The building is only the fourth in Missouri – and one of fewer than 150 in the United States – awarded Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification, the highest designation to buildings demonstrating energy efficiency – from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“The theme for the (2009) ribbon-cutting ceremony for our headquarters was Sustainable Culture, Global Vision,” says Thad Simons, Jr., Novus president and CEO.  “True sustainability is a culture that begins on an individual level, offering the opportunity for people, the environment, and businesses to benefit.”

It’s not just the corporate offices that are made in America.  The ingredients that go into Arenus products are also all-American.  Relationship building is the Novus approach to sustainability and that includes building relationships with those who supply the ingredients and products that go into good health.

“All our herbs and flowers are ethically and ecologically blended, packaged and distributed within the United States,” said Stacey Small, consultant for Arenus.

More than $30,000 of product was donated to charitable groups, including Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary (saving mares and foals from slaughter) and PATH International (formerly NARHA, North American Riding for the Handicapped Association); as well as $5,000 worth of ASSURE® to ReHorse Rescue Ranch.

Arenus also works with a network of more than 50 U.S. veterinarians to develop sustainable nutrition solutions to equine issues.
