When It’s A Wonder led all the way to win the 145th running of the Grand National Steeplechase in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday, it capped off a winning week for horses wearing FLAIR Strips.

The week before, It’s A Wonder won the time honored Koral Steeplechase and there were doubts whether he could stay the extra distance of the Grand National (5600m). But any doubts were allayed when he won easily by a wide margin.
It’s A Wonder is trained by three-time NZ Show Jumping Olympian Harvey Wilson - no “wonder” the horse was fine tuned for the Grand National raced on a heavy winter track. Harvey’s wife, Ann, is a key part of the team and is also another top equestrian, being the British Ladies Show Jumping Champion in 1978.
The Grand National carnival in Christchurch is held in mid-winter over three races days. On the first day, in addition to It’s a Wonder’s victory, two other winners raced in FLAIR Strips including Dez, who won the $100,000 122nd Winter Cup, the feature race on Day 1.
On Day 2, two jumping winners wore FLAIR Strips, including Alfie Dee who won the 130th running of the Grand National Hurdles in a titanic struggle after 4200m, winning by the thickness of a FLAIR Strip.
Since the start of the winter jumping season Downunder, 15 jumpers have won wearing FLAIR Strips on the most testing of tracks as well as a host of horses racing on the flat.
