On Friday, November 1, the Jo Hughes conditioned LONDON BRIDGE - a European import - came into the Marathon (GII) with eight lifetime starts -- seven in Great Britain and a most recent start in France. The three year-old son of ARCH earned $275,000 for his efforts and became the first New York-bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
Later in the day, Santa Anita Derby (GI) winner GOLDENCENTS earned $550,000 for trainer Doug O’Neill and his connections, bringing his lifetime earnings total to more than $1.9-million. In the ninth race – the $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (GI) -- Eoin Harty-trained COLONEL JOAN ran a fast-closing third, earning $100,000 for owners Dr. Mark DeDomenico & Kathy Harty.
Saturday also proved to be a day of success for horsemen who protected their runners’ lungs with FLAIR Strips. Trainer Jason Servis sent out TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN to a second-place finish in the $1,000,000 Turf Sprint (GI), earning $140,000 for Ron Lombardi’s Mr. Amore Stable.
Gary Barber & WinStar Farm’s LAUGH TRACK was second in the $1,500,000 Sprint (GI) for trainer Mark Casse. The four year-old son of DISTORTED HUMOR earned $270,000 for his connections.
Trainer Ken McPeek sent out ROSALINDE in the $2,000,000 Juvenile Fillies (GI). The BROKEN VOW daughter ran third, earning $200,000 for Landaluce Educe Stables. Wertheimer & Frere color bearer, SILENTIO, trained by Gary Mandella, earned $200,000 while running third in the $2,000,000 Mile (GI).
Trainers who protected their horses with FLAIR Strips at this year’s Breeders’ Cup included Tom Amoss, David Fawkes, Marty Wolfson, Kathleen O’Connell, Jeff Mullins, Antonio Sano, Darrin Miller, Kristin Mulhall and Jorge Gutierrez. FLAIR-protected horses earned more than $2-million for their respective connections.
