According to the World Veterinary Association, on 12 February 2013, the European Union Commission published a new Regulation No 122/2013, which includes a list of substances essential for the treatment of equines.
The EU legal framework for veterinary medicinal products is intended to ensure a high level of health protection for horses and other animals and to encourage innovation.
The new Commission Regulation amends Regulation (EC) No 1950/2006 establishing, in accordance with the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Community code relating to veterinary medicinal products, a list of substances essential for the treatment of equines.
The EU legal framework for veterinary medicinal products is intended to ensure a high level of health protection and to promote the functioning of the internal market, with measures which moreover encourage innovation. It is based on the principle that the placing on the market of medicinal products is made subject to the granting of a marketing authorisation by the competent authorities.
A large body of legislation has developed around this principle, with the progressive harmonisation of requirements for the granting of marketing authorisations since the 1960s, implemented across the EEA.
