It started with a simple question, but, Oh what an answer Australian graphite artist and horse owner Kerry Masterman had to give!

All Raymond Petterson, President of Sox For Horses ® Inc. asked when he checked in with his international SFH Ambassador was, “How are our Sox doing for you?”

She replied, sending images that spoke louder than words: Equine dermatitis, aka mud fever, had struck the white socks on three of her horse's legs, tripling not only the problem but potentially – had it not been for SFH washable equine leg wear – the high-priced veterinary bills that could have followed.

“To say we are thrilled is an understatement,” Masterman said. “The time Sox take to maintain, change and wash is a token compared to the hours we spent, daily for months, treating Mike over the years. I have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars treating him, including veterinary intervention and antibiotics when one year it turned into cellulitis (and still didn’t fully resolve).

"Sox have kept Mike virtually free of mud fever. He had a tiny (2-3mm) lesion on one heel which probably didn’t stay as well covered but it didn’t progress and there haven’t been any signs of issues on the other legs at all.”

“I am attaching photos, to show what we dealt with for the last six years and then last weekend, when Lexi (my daughter and Mike's proud owner) washed him and the great state his white legs are in now. They are going to their first clinic together and he will sport Silver Whinnys. He went to a hoof trimming clinic last month and everyone talked about his Sox!”

“The value in Kerry's statement is in the fact that she paid so much money out in the past, along with great effort in leg care, to get minimal or no results,” said Petterson. “It also drives home the fact that you can have a horse with healthy, white legs.”

He defends Silver Whinnys price and value: “Custom attention and cutting edge-yarn science are an investment worth making. We knit only in America. That affords superb quality control.

Within 24 hours we can get to our mill to personally sit at a machine and perfect or debug its issues. That would be impossible in China or Mexico where many socks (for people) are knit.

We also custom spin our own yarn, determining the fibers used and choosing the best offering the qualities of embedded silver and wicking. Silver in our Sox is not washed in. 'Infusing' is the most ubiquitous method of getting silver in clothing and equal to dunking a teabag in water. With every washing silver is washed out.

We choose fiber with silver embedded in such a manner that a.) it employs particles small enough to invade cell walls of bacterial microbes thus destroying those cells in the legwear and b.) it will not wash out or degrade for the life of the product. Even as 'rags' they hold the same silver power as the day they were knit.

“Sox then come off the knitting machines and into the hands of real people, who 'finish' them on sewing machines to ensure they are durable enough to withstand equine environments. Each is finished one at a time and inspected for anomalies or knitting errors.”

The end result is an easy to use, washable and safe product that helps solve the toughest dermatitis issues and, because SFH provides an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal environment, horses can keep beautiful, healthy legs all season with minimal effort, exchanging clean Sox as part of a daily grooming routine.

Once legs are clear of dermatitis issues, Sox may be left on 2-3 days between changes, or longer if a horse is not prone to dermatitis.

“Silver Whinnys have proven usefulness beyond fly protection. They are a real bandaging solution for resolving not only dermatitis but serious wounds and injuries,” says Petterson.

“Silver Whinnys are showing veterinarians and educators how a clean, breathable environment, safe level of compression around a wound, and tissue kept at healing moisture levels hostile to bacterial propagation can achieve a speed of healing that inhibits exuberant tissue (proud flesh) from developing even in egregious wounds.”
