Galveston Police officers lead by Sgt Joel Caldwell, supervisor of the Animal Control Division, moved in on a west end horse riding stable this past Wednesday seizing 28 horses and arresting the operator.
The owner was charged with animal cruelty after officers observed on many occasions over a period of time the horses without proper food or water, no shelter from the weather, and living in otherwise squalid conditions.
Caldwell said the same stables was raided in 2010 and horses seized then but the owner, 45-year old Terri Glen of Jamaica Beach, managed to get some of them back after appearing in court. She was not arrested on that occasion, merely cited.
This time Glen was charged with animal cruelty after officers observed on many occasions over a period of time the horses without proper food or water, no shelter from the weather, and living in otherwise squalid conditions.
Several multi-horse trailers from Habitat For Horses of Santa Fe were lined up in the rear of Jamaica Beach RV Park with adjoins the field where Glen operated the riding stables.
After each horse was closely examined for health conditions and photographed they were loaded into the trailers for the trip to Santa Fe where they will be treated, fed and nursed back to health.
Sgt. Caldwell said several of the animals were losing tufts of hair, showing signs of chronic weight loss and malnutrition. None were in good health, he said.
Glen is being held in the Galveston County Jail in lieu of $7,500.00 bail, charged with Animal Cruelty in Justice of the Peace Jim Schweitzer's court.
