BLM Changes Plans to Reduce WY Herd

In a modified decision released Friday, the BLM says it plans to round up nearly 900 wild horses from the White Mountain/Little Colorado herd management areas between Rock Springs and La Barge, Wyoming, during the first part of September.

Following a legal challenge by environmentalists, the BLM says it plans to use a birth-control drug on mares to reduce the growth of wild horse herds instead of capturing and castrating wild stallions.

In the process 700 horses will be sent to holding facilities and the remainder will be released back onto the range after the mares receive a birth control drug.
