A couple out for an afternoon walk made a discovery of six dead horses and the situation has a Montgomery based horse rescue group wondering what may have caused the deaths of the animals.

Kathy Matrician, president of Spirit Acres Farm Equine Rescue and Sanctuary, said she received a call from the couple telling her where she discovered the horses.

“I was suspicious at first because we get a lot of prank calls but she sounded real,” said Matrician. “The young lady told me how she and her boyfriend were walking and spotted that horse’s body and when they looked around a little more, they saw several additional carcasses.”

According to Matrician, the carcasses appear to be about a month old and two possibly were burros. However, there is much speculation on how the horses died and there are several possibilities.

“It could be abuse or neglect,” she said. “I would say somebody starved these horses or they could have got into some poison.”

Although law enforcement officials have been notified, no news is immediately available about their involvement in the case.

As an animal lover Matrician said it makes her sad to see this and believes it could have been prevented. She shared that part of their mission is to help any horse in need. There are so many horses in Montgomery County alone, she said, that need to be cared for.

The main goal for Spirit Acres Farm Equine Rescue & Sanctuary, said Matrician, is to one day donate approximately 150 acres and set it up in a permanent facility. The organization wants to provide care and security for horses in a natural lifestyle.
