Equine Advocates is an equine village where horses get to live out their lives in a natural environment socializing with each other after being slaughter-bound and/or coming from abusive situations.

Equine Advocates is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) equine protection organization which Susan Wagner founded in 1996 after rescuing her first horse from slaughter. His name was Gandalf. Since that time, she and her staff have rescued thousands of equines, including horses, ponies, donkeys and mules from slaughter, abuse and neglect.

Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary has truly become a haven for horses. It is an equine village where horses get to live out their lives in a natural environment that allows them to socialize with each other. Most were slaughter-bound and/or came from abusive situations.

On the sanctuary grounds, are an Education Center where visitors of all ages attend seminars, workshops and symposiums on equine issues, care and natural horsemanship. All visitors get to meet their amazing equine residents.

Wagner and her team of volunteers care for 83 equines, horses, mules and donkeys, on her 140-acre property, and she has worked with organizations across the country to find homes for many more.

The animals at Wagner's sanctuary are not ridden. Many of them cannot be ridden, she explained. They arrived with serious injuries. She makes sure that they are as free from pain as possible, comfortable and well-fed. Some have worn teeth, and one cannot digest hay or grass.

"We have five sound horses here," she said. "Most have physical or behavioral problems" because of the way they were treated. "Some came from auction. Some were bought to keep them from auction."

Typical of the rescued horses at the sanctuary is a thoroughbred rescued from the track. According to Warner, she will need two years of quiet turn-out in the pasture just to get the drugs out of her system -- the steroids and pain-killers and stimulants. She will need two years to detox to let her sharply trimmed feet grow out and strengthen, two years to recover, before she can be ridden at all.

Another rescue, Abby, is a Belgian Draft, and is the offspring of PMU mare, Betsy, who Equine Advocates rescued at a Winnipeg, Canada slaughter auction along with 11 other horses in 2000. Betsy was in foal with Abby at the time of her rescue.

The residents at Equine Advocates Sanctuary need constant care. Many are aged or have health problems because of the abuse and neglect they suffered before being rescued.

This is where the public can help. Your sponsorship of one of these equine residents will go a long way in helping the staff at Equine Advocates continue their efforts to provide a happy life for the equine you choose.
