With support from the AAEP Foundation and Vetoquinol, Equine Guelph and Colorado State University have designed an equine biosecurity risk calculator that a horse owner can use to determine the state of biosecurity at a particular facility.
After an extensive development and review process, this calculator is available on line at http://www.equineguelph.ca/Tools/biosecurity_2011.php. This calculator will enable the horse owner to identify areas in need of improvement to prevent risk of infectious diseases on an equine facility.
By completing an online questionnaire that takes approximately 10 minutes, the calculator will give a general assessment of risk, plus detailed information about areas of concern.
The calculator is free and no identifying information will be collected. By using the calculator and putting in some effort, management practices that will reduce the chances that an infectious disease will be carried onto or spread from a farm can be put into practice.
This information is extremely important because horse farms are often high traffic areas and caretakers need to take every possible step to increase biosecurity for the benefit of all horses.
