Rags to Riches, held at Equine Extravaganza in Richmond, Va., showcased the transformation of horses who had been adopted from a rescue organization or were rescued independently from life-threatening situations.

Caitlin Schoemmell of Chesterfield, Va. and her family adopted How Do You Like Me Now from the United States Equine Rescue League of North Carolina, Triangle Region in 2010. The Appaloosa gelding was initially rescued as a two-year-old with a Henneke Body Condition Score of 1.5. With “Bingo,” Caitlin has participated in jumping and dressage.

"With thousands of rescue horses in need of care and nutrition, education and awareness about horse ownership, care and adoption have never been more important,” says Brant Gilbert, director of horse marketing for Purina Animal Nutrition. “Our sincere thanks go to all participants of the Rags to Riches Horse Rescue Talent Search for helping give rescue horses a forever home.”

For winning the inaugural Rags to Riches competition, Caitlin will receive a prize package of Absorbine® and Equine America® products from W.F. Young and 10 bags of feed from Purina Animal Nutrition. In addition, Caitlin selected the United States Equine Rescue League of North Carolina, Triangle Region to receive a package including 10 bags of feed from Purina Animal Nutrition and 24 cases of Absorbine and Equine America products to assist with the rescue and rehabilitation of horses.

“USERL is excited to be the winner of the Absorbine and Equine America product package and Purina Animal Nutrition feed as part of the Virginia Equine Extravaganza Rags to Riches contest. Bingo (known as Little Joe to USERL) is one of over 1000 horses we are proud to have rescued through our program. Like Bingo, most come to USERL in terrible condition.

This prize package will help to aid in their transition to good health. A great many equine lives will be touched using these products. The volunteers and horses of United States Equine Rescue League are grateful for these gifts,” said Amy Woodard, board chair and regional director of United States Equine Rescue League of North Carolina, Northeast North Carolina and Tidewater, Va.

Jaime McKinley, Vice President of Marketing and New Business Development at W. F. Young said, “All of us at W. F. Young are delighted to continue to support rescue organizations and A Home For Every Horse by supplying quality products to bring abused and homeless horses back to good health.
