The Homes for Horses Coalition is actively engaged in improving the lives of America’s equines by advancing the highest operating standards for equine rescue and retirement homes and facilitating communication and collaboration.

The Coalition was founded in 2007 and is supported by the Animal Welfare Institute, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and The Humane Society of the United States’ Jeannie Dodson Equine Protection Fund.

The Homes for Horses Coalition is actively engaged in improving the lives of America’s equines by advancing the highest operating standards for equine rescue and retirement homes and facilitating communication and collaboration among equine welfare organizations.

"As part of the effort to advance high operating standards, we partner with The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) to promote the GFAS sanctuary accreditation program and were instrumental in helping them develop their standards of excellence for equine facilities," says Cindy Gendron, Coordinator of the Homes for Horses Coalition.

In addition to those operating equine rescue and retirement facilities, members include organizations involved in government policy affecting horses and other equines, and professionals in the field such as veterinarians and attorneys.

Membership in the Coalition grew by 30% in 2013 and now includes almost 270 members.  The cumulative expertise of the group puts the Homes for Horses Coalition in a unique position to advocate for equines from a highly informed perspective that, most importantly, always puts the welfare of equines above commercial interests.

A fundamental benefit of membership in The Homes for Horses Coalition is access to materials and training opportunities, including a national conference, which will enable the continuing professionalism of members, and the most current information on anti-slaughter and other cruelty prevention legislation.

If you are interested in joining this growing group of organizations and individuals interested in taking a proactive stance on equine welfare, an application can be found on the Coalition’s website .  There is no cost to become a member.
