Dealing with difficult horses

Members of the Homes for Horses Coalition are benefiting from a special horse training clinic that focused on rescue horses who can be difficult or dangerous.

The rescue horse training clinic was designed to support rescue centers who often handle horses who have been through traumatic experiences. The clinic was held at The Fund for Animals’ Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, an affiliate of The HSUS, in Murchison, Texas.

Cindy Gendron, Homes for Horses Coalition coordinator, said: “This clinic was the result of remarkable collaboration by trainers, rescuers and equine welfare professionals. It was a priceless opportunity to grow in their knowledge of preparing horses for new lives, and to feel the support of others who make daily sacrifices for equines in need.”

Trainer Trevor Carter designed and taught the three-day clinic to representatives of 12 rescue centers from across the United States.  His teaching experience and knowledge in developing and rehabilitating horses made him the perfect fit to guide others who train rescue horses through this high level topic.

The program focused on the safe evaluation, handling and effective training of horses who are difficult and potentially dangerous when catching and haltering, leading and tying, trailer loading, vetting, trimming and shoeing.

This unique training was designed to further empower and equip rescues with techniques and methods they need to more effectively and successfully re-home horses as willing partners. Rescue organizations who participated in the clinic were also offered follow-up support with Carter.

Dani Horton of Hope Equine Rescue in Florida said: “This was an amazing opportunity to improve my skills in working with horses.  What a joy to work with like-minded people and also learn from other rescues.  Thank you to The HSUS and Trevor Carter for this clinic. I can’t wait to get home and get to work.”
