Opening day at the scenic race track where "the surf meets the turf" in San Diego County brings fans sporting wild and creative hats in a festive party atmosphere as attendees talk about the horses, place bets, drink, laugh, and, in general, have a very good time.

Credit has to be given to the "marketing" that has created an opening day event where being seen is to make a fashion statement as the horse racing season gets underway.

Although dwindling attendance is forcing the closure of some racetracks, the distinct sound of the roaring crowd as the gate opened to begin the first race could not be denied and Del Mar with its scenic setting near the ocean continues to draw crowds.

Jockey Joel Rosario and trainer Peter Miller swept the first two races of the day with Rosario riding Casa de Cambia to victory in the first race and Keep Movin' in the second race.

The season continues with:

  • Sunday, July 21- Family Fun Day, Webkinz Plush Horse Giveaway (kids 12 & under) & Jockey Photo Day
  • Wednesday, July 24- Free & Easy Wednesdays
  • Sunday, August 25- $1 Million Pacific Classic Race Day and Long Sleeve T-shirt Giveaway
