The 2-year-old champion ridden by Victor Espinoza beat out the field of 18 before a record crowd of 170,513 at Churchill Downs on Saturday, capping the two-week-long festival featuring creative hats, fancy dining and powerful thoroughbreds.
American Pharoah had 3-1 odds to win the race, and made a great stretch run to win the race. Dortmund, at 4-1 odds, suffered ihis first loss in seven career races. Firing Line, at 9-1 odds to win, finished second.
It was the fourth Kentucky Derby win for trainer Bob Baffert, and his first since 2002. Jockey Victor Espinoza won the Kentucky Derby for the second consecutive year and third time in his career. He previously won the race with War Emblem in 2002 and California Chrome in 2014
