Over past years, the names for horses appear to stay rather constant, although with the impact of the internet and mass media on a global scale, the names people are giving their horses often relate to movies, books, events and other sources.

What might be surprising about the top 10 most popular horse names is that they are all traditional, although the influence of current media does have some impact with foal names such as "Twilight" based on the hit series coming into play.

For example, in some areas, 'Twilight" has become a favorite name for horses based on the popular "Twilight" series.

Continuing a tradition started in 2001, SmartPak draws the Top 10 List from the horses that receive their supplements in SmartPaks yearly. Custom packed to meet the needs of each individual horse, every daily dose SmartPak is labeled with that horse's name – not only making feeding mistakes virtually impossible, but also giving SmartPak unique insight into naming trends among well-cared for horses.

What might be surprising to see is that the top 10 most popular horse names at the moment are all quite traditional, they’re not outrageous or typically modern names.

The top two names on SmartPak's last year’s list flip flopped this year with “Jack” replacing “Buddy” as the number one most popular. “Bella” moved up from number six to number three, dropping “Max” from three to four.

Two names not included in last year’s Top 10 moved on to the List this year as “Charlie” and “Annie” knocked “Blue” and “Teddy” off the list. “Rocky” and “Cody” remain perennial favorites with each making its eighth appearance on the list since 2001, the first year that supplements became available in daily dose SmartPaks.

SmartPak’s Top Ten Most Popular Horse Names for 2012 were:

  1. Jack
  2. Buddy
  3. Bella
  4. Max
  5. Rocky
  6. Charlie
  7. Chance
  8. Cody
  9. Annie
  10. Beau

With popular horses names beginning with "A'" ranging from "Abbie" and "Ace" to horse names beginning with "Z" such as "Zara" and "Zorro," horse owners have hundreds of choices when naming a new horse or foal. Sometimes a name combining the names of the sire and the mare can be charming and for others, everything from "Black Caviar" to "Sea Biscuit" to "I'll Have Another" can be descriptive as well as unique and timely given the particular horse and the owner's perceptions of the horse.
