Units responded at about 5:30 p.m. Monday for a horse stuck in mud, said Mike Dmuchowski, a Division of Fire and Rescue Services battalion chief. Dmuchowski said he was unsure why the horse was out or how it became stuck.

About 30 personnel, including units from Frederick and Montgomery County fire departments, Animal Control officers and the Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team, worked to free the animal over several hours, taking breaks as the temperatures dipped well below freezing, according to Dmuchowski.

Using straps and a winch, responding officers freed the horse at about 8 p.m. The animal was injured and was euthanized later according to sources.
