Both webinars are part of ELCR’s How They Did It educational programing, focusing on issues faced by horse land owners and equestrians, as they grapple with user conflicts, planning, design and maintenance issues, and the collaborative relationships that must be built between all user groups, agencies and the community to keep access to and expand trails and facilities for equestrian access.
Guest presenter, Gwen Wills of the Pennsylvania Equine Council, will talk about the issues, solutions and collaborations between state agencies and equine advocacy organizations that work to protect and advance trails. The webinar will address trail behaviors and environmental practices that help equestrians to protect and grow access to equestrian trails in their communities and beyond. Trail design, implementation and maintenance will also be covered.
Ms. Wills is the Trail Stewardship Program Director at the Pennsylvania Equine Council. Concerned over the loss of access to public lands for equine use across the country, in 2001 Gwen got involved with the Pennsylvania Equine Council (PEC), a grass roots volunteer organization that represents the equine owners in Pennsylvania.
Gwen has developed and conducts Trail Stewardship Workshops to train volunteers, agency staff, and all non-motorized trail users to collaborate, learn trail maintenance and re-design techniques and integrate “Leave No Trace/Ride Smart” methods into their environmental, behavioral and shared use ethics.
