Ride Smarter, a follow-up to Craig Cameron’s popular first book, Ride Smart, is the latest offering in the Western Horseman book line: Subtitled On to the Next Level of Horsemanship,
Ride Smarter delves into the advantages of cross-training between arena exercises and trail obstacles and how to use that approach to develop a versatile, responsive horse.
Ride Smarter continues to build on many basic horsemanship skills covered in the Texas clinician’s first volume, by providing additional insights, activities and exercises that riders at all levels can adapt to advance their riding goals.
In Ride Smarter, Cameron’s guiding principal for improving horsemanship is simple: Consider what a great horseman in your riding situation would do. Cameron’s early chapters discuss that true horseman’s perspective, and his attitude toward and his responsibilities to his horse, not only in equipment selection, for example, but also in horse care at home or on the road.
Much of Ride Smarter then delves into the advantages of cross-training between arena exercises and trail obstacles and how to use that approach to develop a versatile, responsive horse.
Several chapters reflect Cameron’s straightforward, yet unique approach to horsemanship. In one, he discusses how to correct a horse to reach a satisfactory solution, rather than experience growing confrontation.
In another chapter, Cameron relates how to develop a “brave” horse. One chapter is devoted to the most frequent problems the clinician has encountered throughout his long career and many travels, and Cameron’s ideas about how to resolve those issues.
Finally, this top hand talks about setting goals for your horse and your horsemanship, and how valuable having that sense of direction can be to your riding program.
