Investigators are not sure about the motive, but hair from horse tails has a number of uses including brushes, crafts, pottery, violin bows and braided jewelry and belts.

Owners of show and competition horses are especially concerned since having a beautiful full tail is important during competitions and shows. In addition, a horse's tail acts as a fly swatter and is an important part of the horse's anatomy.

Fremont County sheriff's Capt. Ryan Lee says the investigation includes contacting Natrona and Converse counties, where more than 30 reports of stolen horse tails have been reported during the past month. Sheriff Lee also says those involved could face charges of trespassing, larceny and property destruction.

The thefts have been occurring at night, and authorities say they almost need to catch someone in the act for successful prosecution. Sheriff's deputies and residents have been directed to keep an eye out for any unusual activity and/or people who appear in places where they don't belong.

A  similar series of horsehair thefts occurred in Wyoming a few years ago, but no one was ever caught.
