Rearing is an impressive sight—it’s also one of the most dangerous behaviors horses can display. Julie Goodnight’s latest podcast episode, “Rearing” to Go: What to Do When Horses Rear, is out now (JulieGoodnight.com/Podcast).

“I hope that most horse owners never have to deal with a horse that rears,” says Goodnight. “But if you find yourself in that situation, it’s important that you know how to stay safe and resolve the behavior promptly. All horses can rear if provoked, but some horses are more prone to this behavior than others.”

Goodnight gives listeners an in-depth look at rearing behavior—what causes it, how to avoid it in the first place, what to do (and not do) if a horse does rear, and how to stay safe around a rearing horse—whether you’re on the ground or in the saddle.

“Riders and handlers need to know how to respond safely and effectively when a horse rears—and what NOT to do in this dangerous situation,” says Goodnight. “It’s important to know how to evaluate the horse’s behavior and to find the root cause of the problem.”

As always, each episode wraps up with the popular “What the Hay? Q&A” segment. Goodnight answers real questions horse owners want answers to—from what to do when your horse insists on being in front on the trail, to addressing struggles with ground tying.

Listeners are entertained by Goodnight’s humor and learn from her vast knowledge about all things horse as she tackles the challenges horse owners face every day. With 60 episodes so far, and topics ranging from spooking to canter hacks, this popular equestrian podcast is closing in quickly on 130,000 downloads—and listeners are loving it!

“[Julie] is so intuitive and gifted, and gets right to the heart of the challenge,” says listener, Judy, from Kentucky in her review on Apple Podcasts. “I cannot wait to try her recommendations! … The podcast regarding trot hacks was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and even though I have been riding (and posting) most of my life, I learned so much! So grateful to have access to such wonderful information.”
