The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating a horse theft after an expensive show horse was stolen from a locked facility.

Frosty, a 13-year-old Paint gelding, turned up missing from a private boarding stable over the weekend. The stable's owner, Jan Monasmith, first noticed that Frosty was missing when she went to feed him on Monday morning.

She noticed footprints, which she followed to a gate that had been locked but was pried open and discovered that the footprints led to the front of the house, where it appearerd a trailer had been waiting to take the horse away from the property.

Because of some difficulties the owner has been going through, she had recently advertised that Frosty was for sale, and she was working to find him a good home.

It is now thought that the thieves may have been among those who responded to the ad.

Frosty is white with brown spots across his upper body, and he is missing two front teeth.

He has previously competed in several shows and holds sentimental value for the owner, Sandy, who says he "was like a child."

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating and has several leads.
