More help needed, donations welcome to The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund

The devastating Smokehouse Creek Wildfire in the panhandle of Texas, north of Amarillo, has scorched more than 500,000 acres of land since igniting Monday afternoon, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. It is now the second-largest fire in Texas state history.

This fire is having a profound impact on the horse and livestock population in the area. The Foundation for the Horse, the charitable arm of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), is collaborating with caretakers on the ground to provide prompt aid and support to horses that require assistance.

To help their efforts, The Foundation has made a grant of $10,000 immediately to support the efforts of the Texas Equine Foundation, charitable arm of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association, a group it has partnered with for decades.

Through its Disaster Relief Fund, The Foundation provides immediate care for horses that are affected by disasters by coordinating with AAEP members on the front lines to assess current and changing needs.

Long-term care of these displaced equines will be the most pressing need, and hay and feed are of the utmost importance to support the equines whose owners may have lost everything.

Currently, The Foundation is not accepting physical supply donations. Monetary gifts are more important at this time so that supplies can be sourced locally and quickly.
