March 20-26 will be an exciting time for Monty and Mark Bolender as they collaborate to build an experience that every trail rider looks forward to. Mark Bolender is the nation’s leading horse expert in Mountain Trail. He is a three-time National Champion. Monty Roberts has won 11 world championships across disciplines and is renowned for his horsemanship.
A Bolender Mountain Trail Course is one that is aesthetic or pleasing to the eye, has a good flow pattern, challenges both horse and rider and is a workable training tool. A course is one that should offer a challenge to the beginner and Olympic rider alike, yet be safe when used properly.
"When I am asked to design a course, I work with each client to help them construct a course that meets their needs, says Mark Bolender, "I like to think that I facilitate ideas that are guided by the customer’s input."
Bolender will be onsite from March 20 to build the entire multi-acreage course in six days. On March 26 a train-the-trainers clinic will certify the first trainers to be able to teach at Monty’s ranch. Bolender is known for his natural looking courses seen in the high country.
Bolender and Roberts are preparing for an event in June where Mark will put on a two day clinic June 20-21 with his champion horse Checkers who is famously a Breyer horse.
Each designed site is unique so each course is unique. Monty’s course will be available for competitive trail events as well as clinics and for those boarded at his ranch who have attended a training clinic. A well laid out course will have a place for judges to observe and properly score the rider.
It will also have a place for the public to observe and enjoy watching from the participants on horseback. Trestle bridges, a water pond, suspension bridges, a maze, gates and wash out trails are all part of the design.
Mark combines his vast experience as a horseman and trainer with a stimulating presentation style. As a former professional speaker, Mark entertains and informs his audience about these growing sports and his new method of horse training.
He has written for, and been featured in, a number of national magazines and is the author of the popular book, “Bolender’s Guide to Mastering Mountain and Extreme Trail Riding."
His articles about these disciplines, new trends, and training methods have made Mark a feature presenter in both print and broadcast media.
"Monty Roberts believes that the time has come for the cross-discipline concepts of non-violent training be shared,” says Debbie Roberts Loucks, “We are adding a Mark Bolender Mountain Trail Course to our family ranch to bring training, competitions and fun to California!
This is the first Mark Bolender course in California and we hope it encourages more courses to expand the circuit.”

MONTY ROBERTS first gained widespread fame with the release of his New York Times Best Selling book, The Man Who Listens To Horses; a chronicle of his life and development of his non-violent horse training methods called Join-Up®. Monty grew up on a working horse farm as a firsthand witness to traditional, often violent methods of horse training and breaking the spirit with an abusive hand. Rejecting that, he went on to win nine world's championships in the show ring. Today, Monty's goal is to share his message that "Violence is never the answer." Roberts has been encouraged by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the award of the Membership in The Royal Victorian Order, as well as becoming Patron of Join-Up International. Other honors received were the ASPCA "Founders" award and the MSPCA George T. Angell Humanitarian Award. Monty is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training.
