The horse-owing public is being asked to protect the well-being of the UK’s equids by sparing five minutes in May to take part in the online National Equine Health Survey (NEHS). The 2014 National Equine Health Survey will run between May 18 – 24.
Now in its fourth year, this easy online snapshot survey is helping to discover more about common health issues in horses directly from horse owners and takes place from May 18 to 24, 2014.
Now in its fourth year, NEHS is an annual survey run by leading charity Blue Cross, in partnership with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA).
It is a quick and easy online snapshot survey that is helping to discover more about common health issues in horses, directly from horse owners themselves.
NEHS data has revealed information about common diseases such as skin problems, lameness, weight issues and colic. The results are shared across the sector to help establish benchmarks for equine health and disease in the UK and define priorities for future research, training and education.
The data is also released to equine and veterinary colleges and universities to be used as primary source material.
Last year’s survey revealed that 18.6% of horses suffering with lameness issues, predominantly degenerative joint disease, a 5% increase on the previous year. This suggests a need to increase awareness of lameness management and prevention among the veterinary industry and owners.
Those who take part will be entered into a draw to win prizes, including a Jefferies Bridle, Olympia tickets and an Arthur Carter hay steamer.
