Because of the economy, many horse owners are attempting to find ways to lower the cost of caring for their horses without endangering their horse's health. Here are several ways to keep costs down:

  • Feed horses to maintain a moderate body condition score
  • Feed hay in feeders instead of on the ground
  • Add fat to the diet of horses with high energy needs
  • Utilize available pasture for feeding instead of feeding hay
  • Store hay properly to reduce waste: on pallets, covered
  • Buy bedding in bulk by chipping in with neighbors and friends
  • Remove shoes and keep hooves trimmed
  • Repair or reuse tack and equipment and always shop for best price
  • Breed fewer horses
  • Reduce travel and/or shows
  • Provide preventative care with proper feeding, vaccinations, dentistry, and deworming to prevent expensive vet bills
  • Call the vet immediately if a horse's condition warrants vet care
  • Share effective cost-saving hints with friends and neighbors
