BLM-New Mexico is announcing its 17th Annual Wild Horse & Burro Expo, October 20-23, in San Antonio,Texas.
During the Expo, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management will offer wild horses and donkeys that were taken off public lands in the West up for adoption at a four-day Wild Horse & Burro Expo beginning Thursday.
More than 50 wild animals will be sold by competitive bid or for a flat fee of $125, which is the minimum adoption fee for most animals. Bidding on a first-come-first served basis will take place Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. Remaining animals will be sold for the minimum fee.
The event, held at the Rose Palace, 25665 Boerne Stage Road, includes a horse show Saturday and “gentling” demonstrations by horse trainer Bill Lopez of Norman, Okla. It is free.
The animals were removed from the range to maintain healthy herds and to protect other rangeland resources, officials said. The event opens Thursday at noon and runs until 6 p.m. that night. It runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday.
Individuals must be at least 18 and have no record of animal abuse in order to bid. They also must have a minimum amount of corral space and adequate facilities to adopt the animals.
