The essay contest was open to all current Youth Members of the American Shetland Pony Club/ American Miniature Horse Registry and American Show Pony Registry. The panel of judges scored the anonymous 200 – 500 word essays based on the essay requirement criteria.

Criteria included seven topics including why they want to own small equine, have they ever raised a Shetland Pony or Miniature Horse foal, and why they think they deserve the equine.

Jessica Tamboe’s essay was read during the presentation of the gelding at the 2015 AMHR National Show in Tulsa. Tamboe’s surprise was evident, “Karen Wales, I can’t thank you enough for this opportunity! A special thanks to Merry Wicke, AMHR Youth Director, and the panel of judges who read my essay and really felt my words.

Alan and Tammi Dial – Wow! You can really keep a secret!” Star Lake Tack donated a blanket and halter. Clark Wood and Shauna Wood-Holm transported, groomed and presented Fiero to Tamboe.

"I’d like to thank Dale Ganger for encouraging me to write an essay, enter the contest and telling my parents that you can never have enough ponies,” states Tamboe. “He is a great horse and has settled in perfectly and we are forming a very special bond already. I think he knew I was his new mom the moment we met. I love him!”

Youth membership is free. For more information on the Gelding Essay Contest and the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR Youth Program, visit www.shetlandminiature.com.
