The Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover will add a new twist in 2012 as 100 yearlings will be offered for adoption for a new youth division. Yearlings will be adopted prior to the Supreme similar to the 200 older geldings that will be offered, too. In 2012, three adult divisions with combined purses and prizes estimated at $200,000 will again be held in addition to the new youth division.
The Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover competition will take place at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas, September 13-15. Applications for potential adopters are due on February 13. The adoption auction will take place March 31 through Superior Productions on RDF-TV.
The new youth division is open to horse enthusiasts between the ages of 8-18 as of application due date. The youth will be competing for $50,000 in prize money, which will be distributed to the top 20 youth finalists. An additional $21,000 will be distributed to the top 10 exhibitors in three age divisions -- 8-10, 11-13 and 14-18 as of time of application. Also, $4,000 will be awarded to the Fan Favorite of the youth finals performance. Youth will train and compete with yearling Mustangs. The yearlings are shown in-hand and are not ridden during the competition.
In addition to the new youth division, three adult divisions will again be offered -- $100,000 Legends division, $50,000 Idols division and the $20,000 Stars division. Mustangs competing in the Star division will be shown in-hand and will not be ridden in the competition.
With the larger purse available, the Supreme event follows a different format than other Extreme Mustang Makeovers, and Mustangs are adopted prior to the competition. The Mustangs, who are virtually untouched by humans, will be picked up in mid-May to begin their training. The trainers have to gain the horses’ trust before they can make the first steps toward preparing for competition.

With more than 30,000 American Mustangs waiting to be adopted in BLM facilities, the Mustang Heritage Foundation is stepping up its efforts to help these American legends find adoptive homes. The Mustang Heritage Foundation’s Extreme Mustang Makeover events continue to showcase the talents of the American Mustang.
Since the first Extreme Mustang Makeover event was held in 2007, the Mustang Heritage Foundation has facilitated the adoptions of more than 3,300 gentled American Mustangs.
In 2012, the Foundation in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management will continue to increase its efforts to raise awareness of adoptions of America’s Mustangs.
