Nouvelle Veterinary Research, Inc. is currently enrolling 15-20 actively training or competing Thoroughbred racehorses into a preliminary study evaluating the impact of inflammation on overall performance and incidence of Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (bleeders) in the racing athlete.
Initial studies by Nouvelle Veterinary, Inc. have demonstrated a high prevalence of oxidative stress as well as elevated inflammatory markers in the Thoroughbred racehorse.
Inflammation is a common denominator behind several equine clinical conditions including exercise intolerance and Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage. Initial studies by Nouvelle Veterinary, Inc. have demonstrated a high prevalence of oxidative stress as well as elevated inflammatory markers in the Thoroughbred racehorse.
EIPH is a common clinical condition affecting a high percentage of race horses in the United States, which can not only impact overall performance but can be career ending. The overall goal of the research project will be to evaluate for the presence of ongoing or chronic inflammation as well as the impact of the administration of a dietary supplement designed to reduce inflammation and enhance blood circulation.
Suitable candidates will be Thoroughbred horses actively in training or competition with or without associated signs of EIPH. EIPH afflicted horses will be given priority enrollment in the study. The candidates will receive blood work analysis and dietary supplement free of charge. Our hope is to improve overall performance and reduce the clinical signs of EIPH by the act of controlling inflammation in the equine athlete.
