History was made in Chinese veterinary surgery last month when the first stifle arthroscopy, keyhole procedure, was carried out in a make-shift vet hospital in Shanghai, China, using a gymnastics mat with a system of ropes from the ceiling to move and position the anesthetized horse safely.

Using experience gained at Towcester Equine Clinic in Northamptonshire, England and top notch surgical equipment at his disposal, Dr. Chan performed the stifle surgery on a top show jumper, Heraldo.

Plans are underway for the construction of an equine veterinary hospital in Shanghai similar to the Towcester Equine Clinic in Northamptonshire, England.

Although the  level of equine veterinary care overall in China is similar to Western standards around 20 years ago, it is expected to advance rapidly now that equestrianism in China is rapidly expanding alongside the overall wealth of the country.
