Teaching of future equine veterinarians and specialists plays a large role in this department’s efforts at NC State Veterinary Medicine. The equine clinical sciences program encompasses clinical service and teaching. Clinical service is related to work in the NC State Veterinary Hospitalfor referring veterinarians and their clients or can occur in the hospital of a requesting veterinarian.

Research involves examining hospital data retrospectively or prospectively or doing basic studies. Teaching includes  lecturing and working with veterinary students in the clinics, working with house officers and post-graduate students, or developing training programs in the Equine Hospital or in out-reach programs for practicing veterinarians.

Equine clinical services at the NC State Veterinary Hospital provide year-round equine emergency care, 24/7, for critically ill and injured animals, neonatal intensive care and high-risk pregnancies, and urgent care (same-day, no appointment) equine patients.

Equine clinical service teams at the NC State Veterinary Hospital include board-certified surgeons and specialists in reproduction, anesthesiology, pain management, sports medicine, rehabilitation, radiology, and equine/large animal internal medicine.

NC State’s Equine Veterinary Service is located in the Farm and Equine Veterinary Medical Center at NC State’s Veterinary Hospital. These services specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical disorders in horses. The Equine Health Center at Southern Pines is a satellite facility offering expanded services.

NC State’s Equine Veterinary Services are supported by up-to-date diagnostic procedures, including body ultrasound; endoscopy of the respiratory system, stomach and bladder; and high resolution radiography, CT scan and MRI techniques. Board-certified specialists, experienced residents, dedicated licensed veterinarian technicians and our supervised students work together to provide the best available emergency care, diagnostic procedures, and hospitalization.
