As would be expected, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture is a leader among other states when situations occur which threaten the equine industry and they are vigilant in sounding alerts when cases of infectious diseases such as West Nile virus and equine encephalomyelitis occur in Kentucky.

In their report for October 4, 2013, they have reported the following Equine Encephalomyelitis and West Nile Virus cases:
So far in 2013, 8 cases of Equine Encephalomyelitis have been reported along with one case of Eastern Encephalitis.
Seven cases of West Nile virus have been reported in the following affected counties: Calloway (1), Christian (1), Edmonson (1) Graves (1), Hopkins (1), Lincoln (1), Todd (1)
Of the horses reported with these diseases, 7 were Non-Vaccinated including 3 Quarter Horses, 1 Paint, 1 Percheron X, 1 Rky Mtn, 1 Standardbred.
Of the unvaccinated horses 6 remain alive and 1 has been euthanized.
