Equine Guelph Announces Two New eWorkshops: Colic Prevention on March 11 -24, and Horse Behaviour and Safety eWorkshop on April 1 -14, 2013
Equine Guelph is combating the number one killer of horses (other than old age!) with a new eWorkshop on colic prevention, March 11 to 24. This short, online course is designed to help owners understand colic and take preventative measures to reduce risks.
Colic and Horse Behavior eWorkshops to benefit horse owners
Equine Guelph’s Colic Prevention and Learning Safe Horsemanship Through Understanding Behaviour eWorkshops translate into savings and help for horse owners everywhere.

At a cost of only $75 plus HST, this eWorkshop could translate into thousands of dollars of savings by helping horse owners avoid the nightmare of colic.
Equine Guelph’s Colic Prevention eWorkshop will cover:
- Reducing the colic risk by identifying risks factors and good stable management practices
- Understanding different types of colics and detecting early signs and symptoms
- Assessing management plans and strategies for prevention
In addition to funding from Alltech and Standardbred Canada, investment in this project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In Ontario, this program is delivered by the Agricultural Adaptation Council.
Partners include: Central Ontario Standardbred Association, Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Society of Ontario, Ontario Association of Equine Practitioners, Ontario Equestrian Federation, Ontario Harness Horse Association and the Ontario Veterinary College.

Learning Safe Horsemanship Through Understanding Behaviour
Equine Guelph is pleased to announce a second offering of its Horse Behaviour and Safety eWorkshop April 1 to 14, 2013. This two week online course is designed for people who would like to learn more about best practices for handling horses safely. Education is pivotal for prevention.
Injuries due to horses are one of the leading causes of animal-related hospitalizations and fatalities (Source: Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting – CAIR). A recent study conducted by the UK Healthcare/UK College of Agriculture revealed that 40-60% of equine-related injury patients believed their injuries were preventable and due to rider error.
"The first Horse Behaviour and Safety eWorkshop sold out within two hours of announcement," notes Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph. "We are pleased by the interest that horse people are showing in educating themselves about 'why' horses behave the way they do in order to become safer handlers."
Equine Guelph’s Horse Behaviour and Safety eWorkshop will help horse people:
- Understand horse behaviour and how to speak their language
- Learn smart, practical horse handling skills to stay safe
- Reduce physical risks on your horse’s farm creating a safe environment
Ten sections will be covered: the horse in the wild as a herd and flight animal, how horses see, how horses hear, horse herd behaviour and interaction, horse handling/approaching a horse, rider/helmet safety, trailer loading safety basics, safety around the barn and paddocks and fire safety.
Funding has been generously provided by Canadian Agricultural Safety Association through the Growing Forward Program and partners: Equine Hippique Canada, Kubota Canada, SSG Riding Gloves, Saddle Up SAFELY, System Fencing, UK Ag Equine University of Kentucky, UK Healthcare, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services AND all equestrian federations across Canada.
