The FEI Bureau has approved changes to the FEI Equine Prohibited Substances List proposed by the FEI List Group which becomes effective on January 1, 2014.

Two new Controlled Medication Substances have been added to the 2014 list. They are Metformin, a potent, but legitimate oral anti-diabetic drug with a welfare risk and Levothyroxine, an exogenous thyroid hormone replacement drug that could enhance athletic performance.

Adrenocortico-trophic hormone (ACTH) which stimulates secretion of glucocorticoid steroid hormones, principally corticostoids and is currently classified as a Banned Substance, will be moved to the Controlled Medication section of the 2014 list because of its therapeutic value in equine medicine.

Three previously unlisted substances: Ammonium Chloride Injectable, Gamma Butyrolactone (GBL), and Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) will be added to the Banned Substances section since they are considered to have the potential for abuse or for improved athletic performance.

FEI rules require that all changes to the List are published 90 days in advance to allow National Federations, athletes, and veterinarians sufficient time to familiarize themselves with the revised list prior to implementation.
