Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Veterinarian, Dr. Nathan Slovis, is ahead of the curve on coronavirus and the equine industry. According to a study published in the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Equine Veterinary Journal, Central Kentucky documented equine coronavirus exposure in 2012.
A study published in 2013 showed coronavirus can be found in both healthy and sick foals with gastrointestinal illness.

The author of the study, Dr. Nathan Slovis DVM, ACVIM, CHT and Infectious Disease Chairman at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, found that the equine and human strains of the virus were actually different.
In his study, Dr. Slovis found that the coronavirus strain in horses caused gastrointestinal illness. Further, it was found that 27% of the healthy foals and 29% of the diseased foals in Central Kentucky had coronavirus detected in their manure.
“Perhaps most relevant to conditions today is that there were no cases of respiratory illness associated with the equine strain in humans. Therefore, we can infer that horses infected with the coronavirus will not spread it to humans,” said Dr. Slovis.
