Hydration and electrolytes for horses

The balance of electrolytes affects and regulates the hydration of the horse's body, blood pH, and is critical for healthy nerve and muscle function.

All animals including equines require a complex balance of electrolytes. The balance of electrolytes affects and regulates the hydration of the body, blood pH, and is critical for healthy nerve and muscle function.

Electrolyte balance is affected by a variety of factors the biggest of which are environmental and physical demands.  Most horse owners are aware of the effects of heat and humidity on their horse’s body; but there must be considerations to the balance of electrolytes in cold harsh weather.  In addition to environmental factors it is necessary to replace the balance of electrolytes based on the physical demands of the horse.  These physical demands should include age, stress level, exercise intensity.

In equines, the primary ions of electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride.  These ions are essential to maintain a healthy balance for optimal health.

Dextrose (sugar) is not an electrolyte and is sometimes added to electrolyte supplements in order to enhance taste and consumption, sugar should not be the major ingredient in an electrolyte. Buyers beware.

Kauffman’s offers presentations of electrolytes in the following options:

  • Hydromax- 10 pound pail, 35 pound pail, 50 pound pail, 50 pound bag.
  • Hydromax paste- 60 cc oral dose syringe, (4) 15 cc feedings.
  • Apple and Orange flavored blends that are water soluble; packaged in 5, 12, 25 pound pails.
  • Electrolyte paste in 35 gram tube, easy to administer packaging.
  • Salt potassium- equal parts sodium chloride and potassium chloride.

Remember it is always important to have clean, fresh water available at all times.  At times when additional hydration is necessary, it is recommended to add water to your horses grain ration and wet their hay..
